From Isaac Job, Uyo

The Akwa Ibom State government has reaffirmed its commitment to diversifying the economy through the maritime sector, urging residents to prepare for opportunities in the upcoming Ibom Deepsea Port and Ibom Industrial City projects.

On Saturday, May 17, 2025, the Ministry of Special Duties and Ibom Deepsea hosted a one-day sensitisation workshop in Uyo for engineers, journalists, ICT experts, architects, civil society organisations, and maritime stakeholders. Themed “Harnessing the Economic Potentials of Blue Economy Value Chain in Akwa Ibom State for Productivity and Sustainable Growth,” the event focused on blue economy and trade logistics awareness.

Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deepsea, Comrade Ini Ememobong, said, “With the commitment of His Excellency Governor Umo Eno, Akwa Ibom is set to join this league through the construction of Ibom Deep Seaport and Ibom Industrial City.” He noted that the training aims to equip residents with skills to participate in the maritime sector, ensuring a pool of skilled manpower for the port and industries.

Ememobong added, “Ibom Deep Seaport and Ibom Industrial City will bring opportunities; we want our people to be prepared so that when this administration actualises these projects, our people can be at the forefront of reaping benefits.” The workshop was designed to deepen participants’ understanding of the maritime and blue economy sectors and their economic potential.

Dr. (Mrs.) Aniefiok Iton, a maritime logistics expert and President of Brightflow Conglomerate, highlighted the sector’s vast potential. “Harnessing the economic potentials in the maritime industry involves leveraging its diverse facets, including blue economy initiatives, infrastructure development and sustainable practices,” she said. Iton emphasised that the maritime industry, vital for global trade, could surpass oil exploration’s impact if properly harnessed.
