2026 Race: Osun Gov Dumps PDP, Cites Failed National Leadership

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has formally dumped the Peoples Democratic Party, citing what he described as “the unending leadership turmoil crippling the party at the national level.”

Adeleke announced his resignation late Monday via a statement shared on his verified Instagram page, confirming that his exit letter was submitted on November 4, 2025, to PDP leaders in Sagba Abogunde, Ward 2, Ede North Local Government Area.

The governor said the decision became unavoidable as the party’s internal conflicts continued to worsen without signs of resolution.

“Due to the ongoing crisis within the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party at the national level, I officially conveyed my resignation letter as a member to the party leadership in Sagba Abogunde, Ward 2, Ede North Local Government, on November 4, 2025,” Adeleke wrote.

He expressed appreciation to the PDP for the platform it provided over the years.

“I thank the party, its members and supporters for the opportunities they have given me — first as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and now as Governor of Osun State,” he added.

Adeleke’s resignation intensifies uncertainty ahead of the 2026 governorship election, with senior PDP stakeholders earlier warning that the governor might boycott the party’s primary if the leadership battle remained unresolved.

Sources within the Osun PDP told PLATFORM TIMES that the governor had grown increasingly frustrated with “the endless legal disputes and factional interference from Abuja.”

Party leaders had earlier expressed hope that reconciliation efforts — if recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) — might persuade the governor to remain under the PDP banner for his second-term ambition.

But Monday’s announcement appears to foreclose that possibility, sending shockwaves through the state chapter, which is already battling factional cracks.

A member of the Osun PDP Working Committee, who asked not to be named, said the party was “not entirely surprised.”

“The handwriting has been on the wall. The national leadership crisis is destroying the party from the top. We suspected he would leave if Abuja failed to resolve the matter quickly,” the official said.

The governor has not publicly declared his next political move, though insiders believe he is being courted by multiple parties ahead of the 2026 race.

A top political associate hinted on Monday night that Adeleke would “consult widely before announcing his new platform.”

Meanwhile, political observers say his resignation could further deepen the PDP’s national woes, following recent defections and mounting leadership litigations.
