Stop Political Noise, Let Nigeria Advance With Tax Reform,’ Says The Alternative

The Alternative, a political movement advocating pragmatic governance, has called on Nigerians to reject what it described as “alarmism and recycled politics” by the National Opposition Movement (NOM) and embrace the country’s ongoing tax reforms.

In a statement signed by its leader, Otunba Segun Showunmi, The Alternative accused NOM of offering no credible economic solutions, warning that continued obstructionism could stall the country’s efforts to restructure public finances and build a sustainable fiscal framework.

“The National Opposition Movement has offered Nigerians a familiar mix of selective outrage and political nostalgia, not a workable economic vision,” Showunmi said.

“Those who presided over years of fiscal indiscipline should prepare for elections, not attempt to obstruct reforms essential for Nigeria’s future.”

Citing international examples, Showunmi noted that Nigeria’s reforms align with global best practices.

According to him, institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank have repeatedly emphasized the need for broad, transparent, and predictable tax systems to support inclusive growth and reduce poverty.

“Across Africa, countries like Rwanda, Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa introduced compulsory tax identification, digital filing, and stricter compliance regimes during periods of economic stress.

“Today, these nations enjoy stronger revenues, increased investor confidence, and expanded fiscal space for social programs,” he added.

The statement also referenced the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which asserts that low tax-to-GDP ratios reflect weak states incapable of delivering essential public goods, not compassion for citizens.

Showunmi drew parallels with India’s landmark GST reforms, which faced fierce opposition but ultimately strengthened the economy.

Highlighting Nigeria’s previous reform successes, he said: “Those condemning tax reform today once predicted that removing fuel subsidies would collapse the nation.

Instead, it dismantled a regressive system that disproportionately benefited the wealthy and drained public finances.”

According to Showunmi, opposition to reform should be grounded in facts and workable alternatives, not “theatrical despair and recycled slogans.”

He stressed that fiscal irresponsibility, not taxation, punishes the poor by driving inflation, currency instability, and endless government borrowing.

“Good governance and sustainable development are impossible without adequate domestic resources,” he said, quoting former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

“Nigeria cannot be held hostage by those offering no credible alternatives. Reform is difficult, but postponing it only deepens the pain for future generations.”.
