The Kirikasamma Local Government Area of Jigawa State has introduced monthly allowances for former chairmen, deputies, councillors and other past political appointees as part of efforts to strengthen engagement with former leaders.

The Chairman of the council, Maji Wakili Marma, announced the initiative on Monday at the council headquarters, saying it was aimed at enhancing collaboration and recognising the contributions of past office holders.

Under the scheme, former chairmen will receive ₦50,000 monthly, deputies ₦40,000, secretaries ₦30,000, while ex-councillors will get ₦25,000.

Marma said the allowances would be paid regularly to ensure consistency and sustainability.

He commended the former officials for their continued support and cooperation in advancing the development of the local government, describing their experience and contributions as invaluable.

According to him, about 100 former political office holders are expected to benefit from the initiative, which he described as a gesture of appreciation for their service and dedication.

“The council has taken this step to foster better relations with our former leaders and to tap into their wealth of experience,” he said.

Marma added that the initiative was also intended to promote unity and progress within the community, urging beneficiaries to continue offering guidance and support to the current administration.

He expressed optimism that the programme would strengthen local governance and contribute to community development.

The council chairman disclosed that payment of the allowances would commence this month, adding that beneficiaries would be encouraged to offer feedback and suggestions on how to improve the scheme.

PUNCH Online reports that the details of the initiative were unveiled at a special meeting attended by former council leaders and serving officials at the council headquarters.
