The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is bracing for a political storm as former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, formally defected to the party, declaring his unshakable ambition to contest the 2027 presidential election.

The move has fueled speculation that his entry could set the stage for a clash with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who is also seeking the party’s presidential ticket.

Obi, former governor of Anambra State, made his intentions clear during a highly interactive session on X, where he addressed thousands of participants on issues ranging from governance to Nigeria’s struggling economy.

He dismissed speculation about accepting a vice-presidential role, stating, “Peter Obi will be on the ballot in 2027.

“I need your prayers. I need your support. I am not travelling round the world to learn governance to be vice president.”

Obi’s declaration followed his official defection to the ADC in Enugu on Wednesday, a move that has sent ripples across Nigeria’s political landscape.

Political economist Prof Pat Utomi, said Obi’s decision to remain a presidential hopeful is a key factor in his credibility.

“I can tell you that Peter Obi will contest for the presidency come 2027 general elections. The day he becomes somebody’s running mate, I will walk away from his corner. I can tell you that for a fact,” Utomi said.

He added that the Nigerian presidency has, over time, become a retirement home for politicians, a trend he described as “not acceptable” for a nation in need of strong leadership.

Obi also criticized current economic policies, warning that excessive taxation without boosting productivity would worsen hardship for Nigerians.

“You cannot tax poverty. Economic recovery must be driven by increased production, investment and job creation,” he said, urging unity within the Obidient movement, especially among young Nigerians, whom he sees as central to building a “just, productive and united” nation.

Atiku Abubakar, a leading member of ADC and former running mate to Obi in the 2019 presidential election, welcomed Obi into the party via his Facebook page.

“It is my pleasure to welcome him officially, as we look forward to a robust working relationship that will foster a virile opposition, one that will ultimately form a government capable of bringing prosperity and peace to our people,” Atiku said.

He described Obi as “my brother and associate” and expressed hope that Obi’s defection would inspire others in the South-east to join the ADC coalition.

Political analysts, however, warn that the dual ambitions of Atiku and Obi for the 2027 presidential ticket could spark internal tensions within ADC.

The party, which has sought to position itself as a strong alternative to the ruling APC and the PDP, now faces the delicate task of accommodating two high-profile aspirants whose personal ambitions could reshape Nigeria’s political map.
