Powerful Enemies Exploited NYSC Certificate Saga To Oust Me — Kemi Adeosun

Former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, has claimed that her resignation from the administration of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari in 2018 was orchestrated by “powerful enemies” who seized on the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate controversy to force her out of office.

Adeosun made the revelation during an interview on Channels Television, set to air on Friday, with excerpts broadcasted Thursday.

The former finance minister resigned in 2018 amid allegations that she had submitted a forged NYSC certificate as part of her credentials. In the interview, Adeosun insisted that the certificate saga was used as a political weapon against her.

“I’m not confused about the fact that I had powerful enemies who I believed saw an opportunity. Let’s get rid of her,” she said.

Adeosun explained that prior to stepping down, she personally informed President Buhari of her intention to resign and pursue legal action against the federal government.

“No one resigned in finance but I did. Why did I resign? The day I resigned, I went to see the president. I said, ‘Mr President, I need to go but I will go to court to clear my name.’

He said, ‘I absolutely support you. Because these names are leased for our children and grandchildren, right? They are going to inherit them.’”

She added, “You destroy your name because you want to stay as minister. For what? I sued the federal government. You can’t be suing the government and staying in the government. You have to go. I think it is the right thing to do.”

Adeosun noted that her resignation was necessary to protect her integrity while challenging the government in court.

In July 2021, a Federal High Court in Abuja declared that Adeosun could not face any penalty or forfeiture over the NYSC certificate issue, with Justice Taiwo Taiwo ruling that she was not obligated to produce the certificate to hold public office in Nigeria.

The court, however, did not rule on the allegations of a forged certificate.
