The Adamawa State Command of the Nigeria Police has warned motorists not to exceed 50 kilometres per hour on city roads, following a road crash linked to illegal racing and reckless driving in Yola.

The warning was contained in a traffic advisory issued by the command, signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, on Saturday morning after a serious accident occurred around 7 pm on Friday at the Bekaji Underpass, along the Unity Flyover–Bekaji Flyover axis.

According to the police, the crash involved two young men driving separate Mercedes-Benz vehicles, with eyewitnesses reporting that the incident was caused by illegal racing and excessive speed.

“Yesterday, at about 7:00 pm, while heading towards Unity Flyover from Bekaji Flyover, I came across a serious road traffic accident at the Bekaji Underpass, involving two young men driving two different Mercedes-Benz vehicles,” the advisory stated.

“Eyewitnesses reported that the incident resulted from illegal racing and reckless driving, which led to a violent collision,” it added.

The police said the vehicles involved were extensively damaged, government-installed streetlights were destroyed, and the occupants of the vehicles sustained injuries.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Dankombo Morris, warned motorists against reckless driving, over-speeding and road racing, particularly within metropolitan areas.

“The Commissioner of Police strongly warns all motorists against reckless driving, over-speeding, and road racing, particularly within metropolitan areas, where such actions pose a serious threat to lives and public infrastructure,” the statement said.

The command reiterated approved speed limits, stating that motorists are expected to drive at a maximum of 50km/h in urban and metropolitan areas and 100km/h on expressways.

It warned that driving beyond approved limits is a violation of traffic laws and would attract strict enforcement and legal consequences.

The police urged motorists to exercise patience on the road, obey traffic regulations and avoid dangerous competition on public roads. “Your life and the lives of others matter. Drive responsibly.”
