In Nigeria, the journey from a minister’s office to a prison cell can be remarkably short. For former Attorney General, Abubakar Malami, that trip took just months.
The man in question was arraigned by the EFCC in December 2025. The charges: a 16-count indictment for money laundering and illicit asset acquisition. His wife and son stood beside him as co-defendants.
According to reports, investigators have traced assets exceeding N212 billion to the family. This plethora includes a university, hotels, and high-value real estate across three states. One charge cites N1.014 billion in a Sterling Bank account. A swift denouement followed. A court ordered them remanded in Kuje Prison. They spent New Year’s Day 2026 behind bars, a stark new reality.
Bail came at a steep price. Justice Emeka Nwite set it at N500 million for each defendant in January 2026. Furthermore, the conditions were strict: they needed sureties with property in Abuja’s most exclusive areas. Their passports were also seized.
Going by Malami’s legal team, this is all a political witch-hunt. Against the EFCC, citing an overwhelming paper trail, this imbroglio moves from the court of public opinion to a federal bench.
Meanwhile, there are new dimensions emerging, including separate probes examining alleged terrorism financing. These also focus on the diversion of repatriated funds from abroad, a spectre that adds gravity to the existing financial charges.
The case’s fulcrum is the evidence, not the rhetoric. Asset documents, bank records, and property deeds form the state’s compendium, so the defence is required to dismantle it link by link.
Malami’s story makes it clear that power is a currency that depletes, that influence has a half-life. The legal shield a minister carries can, upon exit, become a target for the next officeholder. And since the courtroom is now Malami’s arena, it can only be said that the man who once approved charges now fights them. The hearing continues.
