February 23, (THEWILL) — Streets across Mexico have erupted in flames and chaos after authorities killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, famously known as “El Mencho”, the most wanted drug lord and leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
Masked gunmen set fire to vehicles and businesses, while residents and tourists in major cities such as Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta were forced to shelter in place amid widespread violence.
El Mencho was killed in a military operation in his home state of Jalisco on Sunday, dealing a major blow to one of Mexico’s most powerful criminal organisations. The cartel boss, long among the most wanted men in both Mexico and the United States, was notorious for trafficking fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine across the border and for orchestrating violent attacks against government officials who opposed him.
Following his death, CJNG operatives responded with roadblocks and attacks across at least 20 states, including the capital, Mexico City. Authorities reported more than 250 roadblocks, most of which had been cleared by late Sunday. Schools were shut, and local and foreign governments issued urgent warnings for citizens to remain indoors.
President Claudia Sheinbaum urged calm, praising security forces for the operation. The White House confirmed that U.S. intelligence assisted in the mission, highlighting cross-border cooperation, and reiterated support for Mexico’s military. The U.S. Department of State had previously offered a $15 million reward for information leading to El Mencho’s capture.
Formed around 2009, the CJNG is among Mexico’s most aggressive criminal networks, known for targeting military forces, using explosives and drones, and launching high-profile attacks. In 2020, the cartel carried out a grenade and rifle assault in Mexico City against the then-police chief.
El Mencho rose from humble beginnings in Michoacán to head the CJNG through a combination of ambition, ruthlessness, and strategic skill. His leadership allowed the cartel to expand rapidly, especially after the fall of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán and the fragmentation of the Sinaloa Cartel, giving El Mencho control over key narcotics routes.
While authorities and the U.S. hailed the operation as a major victory, the outbreak of violence demonstrates the persistent challenge of dismantling criminal networks without sparking further unrest.
