The Aare Mayegun of Owu Kingdom and convener of the Ajiboshin Platform, Prince Kazeem Adeyanju Olanrewaju Bakinson, has debunked reports linking him to the 2027 Ogun Central Senatorial race, insisting that he has not declared any ambition to contest.
Bakinson, who serves in the Lagos State Government, told journalists at the Owu Club in Abeokuta at the weekend that he is still in wide consultations and remains committed to his current role.
He described the social-media reports suggesting that he had finalised plans to run as premature and unfounded, stressing that he would not take such a major political step without the input of former Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, whom he regards as a mentor and political compass.
“Senator Amosun is my mentor. If I decide to run for Senate in Ogun Central, he is one of the first people I must visit for consultation,” he said.
“I cannot contest against my uncle. It is either I step down for him or he steps down for me.”
Bakinson noted that though he meets all constitutional requirements and boasts the competence required to represent Ogun Central, his immediate priority is delivering on his duties in Lagos and strengthening the Ajiboshin Platform.
“In as much as I am qualified, in fact, one of the most qualified — I want to concentrate on my service to the Lagos State Government for now,” he stated.
“I have not resigned, and my focus is to deepen the objectives of the Ajiboshin Platform.”
The Owu chief explained that his consultations involve respected political and traditional figures across Owu, Abeokuta and Nigeria, adding that credible guidance is essential before making any political decision.
“I have a lot of fathers and mentors, not just in Owu, but in Abeokuta and across Nigeria. I am still consulting because I need direction from people that matter,” he said.
Bakinson also emphasized that his faith would play a crucial role in shaping any eventual ambition.
“As a Muslim and someone who believes in Allah’s ways, if God says I should contest, I’ll give it my all,” he added.
“We need good representation in the Senate — people who will make laws that attract dividends of democracy to our people.”
He however maintained that he is not yet a candidate, but remains constitutionally eligible and prepared to offer quality representation should he decide to enter the race.
“By the Constitution of Nigeria, I am qualified to be a senator, and I will give better representation to the good people of Ogun Central if I choose to run.”
