José Mourinho is set to begin work as Real Madrid’s manager on Tuesday afternoon, Mundo Deportivo reports.
This is just as the club is expected to officially announce his return today, with a presentation ceremony scheduled for tomorrow to introduce him as the team’s new head coach.
The Pope’s visit to the Bernabéu on Monday reportedly delayed Madrid’s official announcement of Mourinho’s return to the club.
The Portuguese manager, who previously led the club from 2010 to 2013, had agreed to return to the Santiago Bernabéu on a two-year deal following a trophyless season for Los Blancos.
His return became a certainty after Florentino Pérez’s re-election as club president on Sunday.
Mourinho, 63, spent the last season at Benfica, where his team finished third in the Portuguese Primeira Liga despite an unbeaten campaign.
The move marks a homecoming for Mourinho, who won La Liga and the Copa del Rey during his first spell at the club.
His appointment is seen as a nostalgic yet pragmatic choice to return to chasing silverware, including the club’s 16th UEFA Champions League title.
