Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has vowed that the party will not repeat the mistakes of the past as it prepares for the 2027 general elections, assuring Nigerians that only credible and committed candidates will fly the party’s flag.
Obi made this promise on Wednesday during the National Executive Council meeting of the Labour Party held in Abuja. He emphasized the need for internal reforms within the party and a renewed focus on values-driven politics.
Addressing members of the NEC, the former Anambra State governor said the Labour Party was determined to rebuild from the grassroots and ensure fairness in its candidate selection process.
“Let’s do the right thing. Let’s go from ward to local government, to state, to zone, and nationally. Everybody is free to contest,” he said.
Obi acknowledged that the party had made some missteps in the past but assured that lessons had been learned. “We want to correct the mistakes we made in the past.
We are going to be sure that whoever wants to contest must be a Labour Party member and not someone on transit,” he said, subtly referencing incidents in 2023 where the party was criticized for fielding controversial or late entrants into the race.
He added that the Labour Party was building a political movement driven by ideology rather than convenience, stressing that the party would only present candidates who share its values and vision.
“It’s going to be a party of ideology and not a party where you just elect people and they become whatever goes on,” Obi said.
While calling for internal democracy and discipline, the 2023 presidential hopeful said the Labour Party was determined to offer Nigerians the best candidates for all elective positions—from House of Assembly to the presidency.
“We want to go into the next election knowing fully well that we are offering Nigerians the best of people for House of Assembly, House of Reps, Senate, governors, and every form of election,” he said.
Obi, who has become a major opposition voice since the 2023 polls, reaffirmed his belief that standing for what is right remains paramount, even if it means losing elections.
“We must have senators who agree with us. Even if we fail, we fail doing the right thing. It’s better to fail doing right than be on the side of wrong. We are going to do that for Nigeria,” he declared.
The Labour Party has faced internal challenges and leadership tussles in recent months. However, Wednesday’s NEC meeting appeared to be a move toward reconciliation and repositioning ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Obi’s remarks are expected to energize the party’s base and set the tone for a more structured and principled approach as Nigeria inches closer to 2027.
