President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, on Thursday called for a stronger partnership between Nigeria and China, lauding China’s extraordinary transformation as a model of visionary leadership and strategic development.
Akpabio made the appeal in Abuja during a courtesy visit by a delegation of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference led by its Vice Chairman, Hu Chunhua.
The former Akwa Ibom State governor commended the evolution of Nigeria-China relations over the past 50 years, describing it as cautious beginnings to a confident, strategic alliance.
He said, “We’ve moved beyond formalities to build a genuine and enduring friendship.
“China’s rise from poverty to global influence has been truly remarkable. Your journey demonstrates the power of long-term planning and determination.”
The Senate president highlighted China’s significant role in Nigeria’s infrastructure development, noting its impact across transportation, technology, and industry.
“From our roads and railways to the ports creating new economic gateways, China’s contributions are visible and valuable.
“These aren’t just structures—they’re symbols of mutual trust and cooperation,” he said.
Akpabio also referenced President Bola Tinubu’s recent state visit to Beijing, which set the stage for a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between both nations.
He emphasized that the agreement signals a commitment to a shared future.
Citing a Chinese proverb, he added, “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.”
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to journey alongside China toward modernization, peace, and shared prosperity.
Akpabio praised the CPPCC’s role in fostering consensus within China’s political framework and advocated for increased collaboration between the Nigerian National Assembly and the CPPCC through parliamentary exchanges and institutional partnerships.
He also acknowledged the benefits of initiatives like the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and the Belt and Road Initiative, especially in infrastructure, education, healthcare, trade, and digital technology.
However, he stressed the importance of addressing issues such as trade imbalances and visa reciprocity through ongoing diplomatic dialogue.
In his remarks, CPPCC Vice Chairman Hu Chunhua emphasised Nigeria’s strategic importance in Africa and on the global stage. He expressed China’s desire to deepen cooperation, particularly in agriculture and scientific innovation, with a special focus on rural development.
Chunhua also announced plans for a China-hosted youth conference, inviting Nigerian youth to participate as part of broader efforts to enhance cultural exchange between both nations.
