The Labour Party (LP) held a pivotal National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, chaired by Nenadi Usman, the former finance minister now leading the party’s caretaker committee.

This gathering comes amidst the ongoing leadership crisis, following the controversial Supreme Court ruling on the party’s leadership dispute.

The meeting, which took place at the Transcorp Hilton, attracted prominent figures within the party, including Peter Obi, the LP’s 2023 presidential candidate; Datti Baba-Ahmed, his running mate; and Alex Otti, the governor of Abia State.

Other key attendees included Olumide Akpata, the party’s governorship candidate for Edo State, and Athan Achonu, the governorship candidate for Imo State.

This meeting follows recent tensions within the party, especially after Julius Abure, the factional chairman, issued a threat to sanction Obi and Otti for their involvement in organizing the session.

Despite the threats, many LP lawmakers, including senators and House of Representatives members, attended the meeting in support of the Usman-led caretaker committee.

During the session, the NEC passed a unanimous vote of confidence on Obi, Baba-Ahmed, Otti, and the Usman-led committee, further solidifying their positions within the party.

Usman, in her opening remarks, appealed to members of the former National Working Committee (NWC) to cease hostilities and contribute to the process of rebuilding the party.

She also revealed plans to review the party’s recent governorship primaries in Anambra State, with an official statement expected soon.

On Saturday, George Moghalu, the former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), was declared the winner of the LP primary held in Awka, the Anambra state capital.

This meeting marks a critical point in the party’s ongoing internal struggles, as leaders strive to consolidate their positions and chart a course for the future.
