Aba Power has announced that it will generate over 350 new jobs through its new mass rollout of prepaid meters, which is set to commence this month. The initiative, driven by strategic partnerships with multiple meter manufacturers, is part of the company’s broader commitment to improve service delivery and accelerate metering coverage across its franchise area.
Speaking on the development, Edise Ekong, Senior Manager for Brand and Communication at Aba Power, said the jobs will emerge directly from collaboration with three major meter vendors.
“Each of the meter vendor partners,” Ekong explained, “is creating over 100 direct jobs, including meter assemblers and meter installers, apart from transporters, warehouse hands, security, and others who will be impacted positively by the rollout.”
He noted that Kayz Consortium, one of the key partners, is taking significant steps to ensure high-quality meter assembly. “Kayz Consortium, for instance, is, in addition, bringing eight expatriates this month to lead its 130-man workforce in assembling 90,000 meters from April to December 2025 for Aba Power customers,” he said.
According to Ekong, the expatriates are representatives of the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) from China. “The expatriates will return to their home country when they conclude their supervision of the meter assembling, having trained enough of our people to continue assembling and installing the meters. These are representatives of the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) from China, and their presence ensures quality assurance in assembling and installing the meters in the field,” he added.
Ekong also quoted Prince Kalu, Managing Director of Kayz Consortium, as saying that the meter assembly operations will be based at the Aba Power premises in the Osisioma Industrial Layout, starting mid-April.
Additional support will come from two other firms—Chint and Eve Electric—both of which will begin meter installations in May, each deploying 34 professional installers. Chint Power and Energy Services of China and Eve Electric, also based in China, will lead the second phase of installations.
These international partners will be complemented by Nigerian meter manufacturers, including HAMPOC Utilities Limited and M.E. Meters. Together, they are contributing to Aba Power’s fast-tracked metering initiative across its service area, which covers nine of the 17 local government areas in Abia State.
Ekong revealed that Kayz Consortium alone will install 20,000 prepaid meters in April. “The 20,000 meters installed by Kayz in April will make many in the Aba Ring-fenced Area, covering nine of the 17 local government areas in Abia State, have meters and will help end complaints about the estimated billing system,” he said.
He emphasized the company’s long-term commitment to ensuring universal access to prepaid meters within its customer base. “We are committed to providing enough meters to all our over 350,000 customers in the Aba Ring-fenced Area with modern prepaid meters within one year,” Ekong stated.
“Meters make for transparency and accountability, making our customers and our company happy and satisfied. It is truly a win-win for every party,” he noted.
