The federal government, through the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP), has launched a N5 billion clean energy initiative aimed at providing affordable access to solar home systems for women across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.
Themed “PowerHer 774 – End Energy Poverty for Women,” the project aims at enabling women to access local renewable energy technologies and tools to enable them to resolve their energy needs at home and at their places of business.
Speaking at the launch during a stakeholders’ engagement forum in Abuja on Wednesday, CREDICORP’s Managing Director, Engr. Uzoma Nwagba, announced that the credit would be disbursed under the Credit Access for Light and Mobility (CALM) Fund. He described the initiative as a continuation of the Corporation’s mission to use consumer credit as a catalyst for dignity and development.
“Beyond general credit for over 35,000 civil servants and Nigerian workers, we moved to enable targeted life-enhancing products. We began with mobility—thousands of Nigerians now accessing vehicles they pay for over time. Now, we are bringing energy supply to women who need it to grow their homes and businesses. And the wave continues: to digital devices, home improvement, and micro machinery. This is what consumer credit should do: unlock real, everyday possibilities to live better now,” Engr. Nwagba stated.
Also speaking, the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim applauded the initiative, highlighting its strategic alignment with the Ministry’s long-term goals
“PowerHer 774 is our flagship framework for reaching women at scale—with tools, financing, and empowerment opportunities that truly change lives. What we are seeing today with CREDICORP and Spark Concepts is the kind of collaboration that brings that vision to life, one community at a time.
“This deployment is national, and this event in Abuja is symbolic and only the beginning. We will continue to scale the programme nationwide to reach thousands more Nigerians across rural and urban communities. Backed by CREDICORP, the data and access support of the Ministry of Women Affairs, and powered by credible partners, the clean energy credit solution will continue expanding in the weeks and months ahead.” the Minister stated.
