The Niger State Government has clarified that Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s visit to St. Petersburg, Russia, aimed to secure a multi-billion-naira partnership with St. Petersburg Mining University to develop the state’s mining sector.

Hon. Aminu Suleiman Takuma, the Niger State Commissioner for Trade and Investment, outlined the visit’s significance in a statement issued in Minna on Tuesday.

Takuma explained that the trip allowed the governor to explore collaboration opportunities to enhance the state’s natural resource development and technical capacity in mining. He noted that Governor Bago was expected to hold high-level discussions with university officials on potential partnerships in education, research, and technical support. “This aligns with the state’s long-term vision of leveraging education and international partnerships to promote sustainable development and economic resilience,” Takuma said.

He mentioned the governor’s focus on equipping Niger State’s workforce with modern skills in mining-related disciplines. The visit sought the university’s support for training students and professionals, as well as joint research and development initiatives to improve mineral exploration and mining techniques.

Takuma also revealed plans for an Executive Bill titled “Responsible Mining” to be sent to the Niger State House of Assembly. The bill aims to regulate mining operations, ensure sustainable practices, and strengthen oversight. He added that the partnership with the university will provide technical assistance to improve operational efficiency, environmental sustainability, and safety management in mining activities.

The commissioner stated that this collaboration is expected to create jobs, boost Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), and enhance Niger State’s economic outlook.

“St. Petersburg Mining University, known globally for its excellence in mining and natural resources education, presents a promising partner. The university’s expertise in mining technology, safety, and environmental management aligns with Niger State’s drive to reform and professionalise its mining sector,” the statement concluded.
