The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has declared it will not participate in any political coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting it will instead focus on internal party reforms and membership mobilisation.

This decision was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Friday at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.

The communiqué was jointly signed by National Chairman, Julius Abure, and the National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim.

“NEC declared that the party is not and will not be part of any coalition towards the 2027 general election,” the communiqué read.

According to the party, its strategy moving forward is to rebuild, reposition, and reconcile its ranks, while strengthening internal structures and policies in preparation for the next elections.

The NEC reaffirmed the legitimacy of the Labour Party’s 2024 national convention held on March 27 in Nnewi, stating that due process was followed.

It said a prior notice was issued to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on December 4, 2023, with subsequent updates on changes in date and venue properly communicated.

The council also ratified the list of ad-hoc delegates elected across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, a move it said was first agreed upon during the NEC meeting in Asaba on March 20.

In addition, the NEC lauded the Supreme Court’s April 4 ruling, which affirmed the supremacy of political parties and the binding authority of decisions taken by their recognised organs.

“NEC commends Nigeria’s apex court for standing on the sound principle of the supremacy of political parties, and the sanctity and bindingness of decisions taken by the validly convened recognised organs,” it stated.

The Abure-led faction also expressed confidence in the current National Working Committee (NWC), reaffirming its support for Abure’s leadership.

It congratulated George Moghalu on his emergence as the Labour Party’s candidate for the Anambra governorship election and called on residents of the state to rally behind him ahead of the November 8 poll.

In a move to address internal discord, the party announced the constitution of a five-member disciplinary committee to investigate Governor Alex Otti of Abia State and others over alleged anti-party activities.

The committee is chaired by Ayo Olorunfemi, with Ibrahim serving as secretary, and Kehinde Edun, Dudu Manuga, and Callistus Ihejiagwa as members.

The panel has been mandated to submit its findings within two weeks.

Meanwhile, reacting to the development, Governor Otti dismissed Abure’s position, describing it as baseless.

Speaking on Arise TV on Friday, Otti said, “When you go through the Supreme Court judgment, you will know that Abure is just masturbating. He is out.”

The NEC has extended a call for reconciliation, urging aggrieved members to return for the unity and progress of the party and the nation.
