Sir Kay, as I would call him in this write-up, is something to everybody- a powerful media man, a respected senior citizen, a chairman of chairmen at Lekki Phase I, a former Commissioner of information in Ekiti State and a powerful TV analyst in Nigeria’s favourite TV station, ARISE TV.
Sir Kay is 70 and the trumpets had to be blown. That was how the University of Ibadan Alumni Lagos Chapter rolled out the drums to celebrate its iconic former chairman and decided to have me deliver the birthday lecture.
Me? E mi? No, there must be a mistake. It cannot be me o and the next thing, na letter I see from them. Mbok, confusion hit me, why did they choose me, what would I wear and what would I even say?
Mbok, I started to ask around: Please what is a lecture as I did not know the difference between lecture, speech and presentation?
Anyway, the time came and we entered the place. Ohhh my God! The Intercontinental Hotel venue brimmed with top personalities. From the great Femi Falana, SAN to Lady Maiden Ibru and of course, the Chairperson, the still delectable Ambassador Marcus-Bello who sat beside me and said “Duke, don’t start your speech with ‘all protocols observed,’ it is wrong, just say good evening distinguished ladies and gentlemen.”
Sir Kay is an enigma, an upright Nigerian and a man of many parts. Here is wishing him the very best of life, good health and a hearty 70th. Congrats sir.
