Hon. AbdulKabir Adekunle Akinlade, former member of the House of Representatives and 2019 governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), has described the recent upgrade of the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro, Ogun State, to a federal university as the realisation of a historic aspiration for the people of Yewa.

In a statement released by his media aide, Akinleye Olu-Philips, Akinlade said the development signals more than a change in academic status—it marks a generational leap forward for the Ogun West Senatorial District in education, economy, and social advancement.

“For Yewa and indeed Ogun West, this upgrade is not just an institutional change—it is the unlocking of a new chapter filled with endless possibilities,” Akinlade said.

He described the elevation as the fruit of “long patience, sustained advocacy, and divine providence,” noting that a federal university is a proven catalyst for transformative growth, bringing job opportunities, infrastructural development, and heightened academic engagement to host communities.

“Across the world, the presence of a university in a locality elevates the fortunes of its people. It fosters research, skills development, and industry-academic synergy, serving as a launchpad for innovation and economic revival,” he added.

The former lawmaker commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he called bold and inclusive governance under the Renewed Hope Agenda, saying the decision to grant the upgrade demonstrates the administration’s commitment to education as a tool for national integration and development.

“This is a strong validation of the president’s belief that education is central to national growth and global competitiveness,” Akinlade stated.

He also praised Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, who sponsored the bill that led to the upgrade.

He described Adeola’s role as pivotal and reflective of responsible representation.

“Senator Adeola’s tireless advocacy and passionate commitment to Ogun West have translated into tangible results. This achievement is a testament to his unwavering sense of duty to his people,” he said.

Akinlade further acknowledged the contributions of the Olu of Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, and other traditional leaders for their support and leadership in the attainment of the landmark feat.
