Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has dismissed speculations suggesting a rift between him and President Bola Tinubu, describing the claims as baseless and the handiwork of mischief-makers.

Sanwo-Olu made the clarification on Sunday during a visit to President Tinubu’s residence in Ikoyi, Lagos, alongside members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

The visit, which came amid mounting rumours of a frosty relationship between the duo, was described by the governor as a routine “festive courtesy call.”

Addressing journalists after the closed-door meeting, Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his loyalty to the president and dismissed the claims of a fallout as a creation of individuals trying to sow discord within the APC family.

“Do you see any discord? Can’t you see that you are smiling? I’m smiling. There’s none,” he said, when asked about the purported feud.

He added, “There are people who believe they are more Catholic than the Pope. People are just crying more than the bereaved. We are grateful that he has given us an audience today.”

The rumours had intensified following recent events, including the temporary impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly and President Tinubu’s perceived snubbing of Sanwo-Olu during the inauguration of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project.

The Lagos governor was also notably absent at the flag-off of the reconstruction of the deep seaport access road, further fuelling speculations of a strained relationship.

But Sanwo-Olu, while speaking on the purpose of their visit, disclosed that Lagos APC leaders expressed their support for Tinubu and praised the president’s handling of national affairs.

“We told Mr. President that Lagosians and Nigerians are feeling the impact of his administration positively,” he said. “The economy has made a positive bend. So, what will be the basis of the planned June 12 protest? Give this president more time.”

Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the administration was focused on stabilizing the country’s economy and that premature criticisms were unhelpful.

The governor’s comments appear aimed at dousing tension within political circles and reassuring party stakeholders of unity within the Lagos APC structure.
