The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently overhaul his administration’s response to the growing crises of insecurity and corruption in the country.
Obi warned that Nigeria risks further loss of lives and a rapid erosion of its global reputation if immediate and decisive actions are not taken.
In a statement shared via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, the former Anambra State governor expressed deep concern over what he described as the increasing normalisation of bloodshed and impunity across the nation.
“The regularity of bloodletting of innocent souls in our country has reduced the news value of human deaths,” Obi lamented.
He cited recent violent incidents reported in a single day across several states, noting that many other cases of killings and attacks go unreported as violence spreads unchecked.
“For a country not officially at war, this is terrifying,” he said.
Obi criticised what he termed the Federal Government’s silence and lack of empathy in the face of mass killings and rising insecurity, warning that such inaction is breeding resentment among Nigerians and portraying the administration as indifferent to the suffering of citizens.
“The grieving Nigerians are not shown any empathy by leaders,” Obi stated. “An administration that continuously allows insecurity and other vices to thrive is doing a grave disservice to the nation.”
He also decried the government’s failure to confront systemic corruption, warning that the situation amounts to “real demarketing” of Nigeria in the international arena.
Calling on President Tinubu to accept criticism as a tool for national improvement, Obi stressed that tackling insecurity must become an urgent national priority beyond politics.
“We must begin to treat insecurity as an utmost national priority… All hands must be on deck. We must act now to save our country. Nigerians deserve to live,” he said.
The Labour Party standard bearer concluded by urging Nigerian leaders to rise above partisan interests and confront the existential threats facing the country, adding, “The world is watching.”
Obi’s comments come amid growing public frustration over worsening security challenges, including frequent attacks by bandits, kidnappers, and other violent groups in different parts of the country.
