Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and other top-ranking leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) met behind closed doors in Abuja on Tuesday as opposition forces intensify efforts to form a grand coalition to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
The high-level meeting had in attendance former Senate President David Mark; former governors Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Sam Egwu (Ebonyi), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), and Liyel Imoke (Cross River), as well as former PDP National Chairman, Uche Secondus.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the gathering was part of a larger political strategy ahead of a crucial coalition summit scheduled for Wednesday, where leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other key opposition figures are expected to formalize a united front.
Since the beginning of 2025, opposition consultations have gained momentum amid growing discontent with the APC-led government. Talks have revolved around adopting a single political platform, with the ADC emerging as the preferred choice for the proposed alliance.
Sources familiar with the coalition talks disclosed that other major political players in the negotiations include Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi; former Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufai; and former Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi—signaling a rare convergence of political heavyweights from different ideological camps.
In a previous interview, Lamido confirmed his commitment to “any arrangement” that would lead to the ousting of President Bola Tinubu in 2027, underscoring the growing resolve among the opposition to reclaim power.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that David Mark may have been appointed interim national chairman of the ADC as part of its transition process.
When contacted, the party’s founder and current chairman, Ralph Nwosu, acknowledged that the ADC was undergoing a leadership transition and praised Mark’s capacity to offer the focus needed in the coming months.
Political analysts believe that if the coalition holds, the 2027 presidential election could witness one of the fiercest battles in Nigeria’s recent political history.
