2027 Polls: I’m No Longer Partisan, Says Tanko Yakasai

Elder statesman and nationalist, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, has declared that he is no longer affiliated with any political party or group, distancing himself from the flurry of political alignments building up ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking with journalists in Kano on Wednesday, the 98-year-old statesman said his current preoccupation is with national development and not partisan politics, stressing that his role now is to support ideas that will help move Nigeria forward.

“I am not a member of any political group or organisation,” Yakasai stated firmly. “At this point in my life, my interest is solely on promoting initiatives that will ensure the progress of our country.”

His comments come amid reports of politicians lobbying respected elders across the North and other regions for endorsement as political realignments gather momentum.

Yakasai, who has been involved in Nigeria’s political development for over six decades, served as Commissioner under the military administration of Audu Bako in Kano State and later as Special Adviser on National Assembly Matters to President Shehu Shagari during the Second Republic.

A founding member of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Yakasai was a close associate of Nigeria’s First Republic leaders and remains one of the most vocal voices on issues of governance, unity, and constitutional reforms.

Despite his withdrawal from active politics, Yakasai continues to shape national discourse through mentorship, public commentary, and policy advocacy.

He reiterated his commitment to democratic ideals, urging younger politicians and leaders to focus on good governance, inclusivity, and the collective interest of Nigerians.

“I have given my time to politics. Now, I want to give the rest of my time to mentoring and helping shape a better Nigeria for future generations,” he said.

Yakasai’s latest stance is seen by observers as a subtle rebuff to political actors attempting to draw him into the evolving contest for power ahead of 2027.

He remains one of Nigeria’s most enduring political figures, known for his bluntness, consistency, and unwavering belief in a united Nigeria.
