The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has said it would continue to drop petrol prices to the benefit of over 200 million Nigerians.

Spokesman for the company, Mr. Anthony Chiejina, told Saturday Sun in a telephone interview yesterday. He said the company would not satisfy a few business interests in the downstream sector to the detriment of Nigerians.

On the complaints by marketers that the frequent drop in petrol prices by Dangote Refinery was disrupting the market, Chiejina said: “Which is better, to do good or evil?” The Dangote spokesman said for a long time, a privileged few have controlled the market, and now that the game is over, they should bear the brunt.

He maintained that the Dangote Refinery is not in business to serve the interest of a privileged few but rather the generality of Nigerians. He assured that the refinery would continue to drop prices in line with market reality. The Dangote Refinery had two days ago slashed its fuel price to N820 per litre from N840, the second time in two weeks.

Recall that on July 1, Dangote Refinery had reduced its ex-depot petrol price to N840. The development forced the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited to reduce its retail petrol to N910 per litre in Abuja.

Similarly, Dangote Refinery’s retail partner, MRS filling station, recently adjusted its petrol price to N905 per litre in Abuja and N895 per litre in Lagos State.

In response to the mounting pressures of fluctuating petrol prices, especially by Dangote,  fuel marketers are forging strategic alliances to minimise losses, safeguard business sustainability, and maintain steady product distribution across the country.
