The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), at the weekend, reaffirmed its ownership of the two parcels of land located in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), describing a recent public notice by the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) as “misleading” and “legally unfounded.”

The NLC, in a statement issued on Friday, signed by the president, Joe Ajaero, expressed dismay over a notice published in national dailies on July 10, 2025.

The notice, signed by the managing director and CEO of NSITF, Mr. Oluwaseun Faleye, claimed that the certificate of occupancy, power of attorney, and deed of assignment for Plot Nos. MISC 54707 and MISC 54824 had been lost.

The publication further advised the public, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), the Abuja Geographical Information System (AGIS), and other relevant authorities not to engage with any party presenting the original documents relating to the said plots.

However, the NLC strongly refuted the claim, stating that both the proprietary and possessory rights to the plots have always belonged to the congress.

“The Nigeria Labour Congress has held and continues to hold both the legal title and physical possession of these plots,” said Comrade Ajaero. “It is, therefore, absurd for any organisation to declare a loss of documents it has no lawful claim to.”

The NLC emphasized that the matter was being handled with restraint and civility, saying it has no intention, for now, of pursuing legal action or damages for the “embarrassment” caused by the notice.

“We believe this is either a case of genuine misunderstanding or miscommunication on the part of NSITF. We are choosing not to press charges at this time, but we strongly advise the NSITF to withdraw the public notice to prevent further confusion,” Ajaero added.

The NLC urged NSITF to consult with the Congress and Trustfund Pensions, which it described as the appropriate stakeholders for clarification on the ownership of the land.

“The public, FCTA, AGIS, and all authorities with jurisdiction over land titling are advised to disregard the said notice. The facts of ownership are clear, and due process must be followed,” Ajaero concluded.

The NLC’s statement appears to be aimed at maintaining institutional integrity while ensuring that the record is set straight on what it insists are long-held legal entitlements.

Efforts to get NSITF’s response on the issue were however unsuccessful as of the time of writing this report.
