July 24, (THEWILL) — France will recognise a Palestinian state, French President, Emmanuel Macron, said on Thursday.
“True to its historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognise the State of Palestine. The urgency today is to end the war in Gaza and to provide aid to the civilian population. Peace is possible”, Macron wrote in a post on X, adding that he would make the solemn announcement at the United Nations General Assembly in September.
Calling for end to Israeli military action in Gaza, Macron stressed that “there must be an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and massive humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza. It is also necessary to ensure the demilitarisation of Hamas, secure and rebuild Gaza.
“Finally, it is essential to build the State of Palestine, ensure its viability, and enable it, by accepting its demilitarisation and fully recognising Israel, to contribute to the security of all in the Middle East”, he added.
Meanwhile, Isreali Justice Minister, Yariv Levin, said, “French President Macron’s decision to recognise the fictitious Palestinian state is a black mark on France’s history and direct support for terrorism.
“The Land of Israel belongs to the people of Israel, and even President Macron’s declaration cannot change that. It is time to apply Israeli sovereignty to Judea, Samaria, and the Jordan Valley. This is a response of historical justice to the shameful decision of the French President.
“It rewards mass murder and tells Islamist terrorists: kill Jews, and the world will hand you a state. This shameful decision will be tossed into the dustbin of history.”
Also, the Yesha Council, the umbrella organisation representing Jewish communities in the West Bank has condemned Macron’s decision.
Yisrael Beytenu, the chairman of Avigdor Lieberman, said on X, “Recognising a Palestinian state is a reward for terrorism and encouragement for Hamas, an organisation that carried out the most horrific massacre of Jews since the Holocaust. This is not justice, it is surrender to terrorism.”
