Comedy is deeply rooted in my family

Behind the viral skits and infectious laughter is the story of a determined young man who turned hardship into humour and grief into greatness.

Chimaobi Alpha Moses, widely known by his stage name Mobility Comedies, has become a household name among lovers of Nigerian online comedy — but his journey to fame was anything but easy. Born with a passion for storytelling and a gift for humour, Chimaobi graduated from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture in 2019. Before fame found him, he toiled as a phone technician — a job he took on out of necessity, not choice.

“It wasn’t glamorous, but it was necessary for survival. Balancing academics with work wasn’t an easy feat, but I pressed on. There were times I felt overwhelmed, but I kept reminding myself why I started. That ‘why’ was deeply rooted in the family. The name Mobility was a nickname given to me by my late father, a man whose dreams and influence still guide me. The name means carrying forward his dreams as much as my own. It’s my way of honouring his legacy,” he told Saturday Sun.

Mobility Comedies’ major break came when he collaborated with popular skit-maker, Funnybros.

“That collaboration was a game-changer. It pushed me to new audiences and made me realise the power of partnerships in this space,” he said.  Despite the new exposure, success didn’t come overnight. Chimaobi invested time and effort into growing his audience.

“Building engagement wasn’t instant. I had to stay consistent, improve my content quality, and connect with my audience honestly.”

His unique style, a blend of fiction and real-life experiences is what sets him apart. “I use fictional scenarios mixed with real personal experiences because that’s where comedy resonates most. It makes the jokes hit home.”

Now, with a growing fan base and a strong presence in Nigeria’s skit-making community, Chimaobi is setting his sights on the big screen.

“I want to tell stories beyond social media on television and in film. It’s the next step for me creatively.”
