As CVR Begins August 18 Ahead Of 2026 Governorship Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised concern over the large number of uncollected Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in Osun State, revealing that no fewer than 360,794 PVCs remain unclaimed ahead of the 2026 governorship election.

Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, made this known on Tuesday, during an interactive session with members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Osogbo.

Agboke disclosed that the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise will commence on August 18, 2025, with the online phase, while physical registration is scheduled to begin a week later, on August 25, across the 30 local government areas and the Modakeke area office.

He noted that out of the 1,954,800 registered voters in the state, over 360,000 have not collected their PVCs, warning that the commission would strictly enforce its “no PVC, no voting” policy in the coming election.

“The CVR will begin online at www.cvr.inecnigeria.org on August 18. After filling the online form, registrants must visit our local government offices for biometric data capture, including fingerprints and facial recognition,” Agboke explained.

He said the physical registration will run daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and stressed that no INEC official is allowed to collect money for registration services.

The REC urged journalists to assist in sensitising residents, especially new voters and those who have relocated, to participate in the registration exercise.

He clarified that only eligible citizens — those who have turned 18, moved residence, lost or damaged their PVCs — should take part, either through transfer or replacement, not duplicate registration.

INEC, he said, will officially issue the notice of election on August 13, in line with the commission’s timetable and electoral guidelines.

On the challenge of vote-buying and electoral malpractice, Agboke called for a united front against the trend, describing it as a “threat to democracy.”

He charged the media to resist becoming instruments of disinformation or fake news and to continue playing their vital watchdog role.

“We must speak loudly against the commodification of votes and the culture of violence and fraud. The media is a key stakeholder in this fight,” he stated.

He assured journalists of INEC’s transparency, urging them to seek clarifications when necessary. “Our office is always open for verification,” he added.

Agboke also commended Osun-based journalists for their professionalism during the 2023 general elections, describing their contribution as critical to INEC’s success in the state.

He called for sustained collaboration to promote a peaceful, credible, and transparent electoral process as the state prepares for the 2026 governorship poll.
