Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia of Benue State has dissolved the State Executive Council, relieving all commissioners and his chief of staff of their duties with immediate effect.

The governor made the announcement on Wednesday at the conclusion of the 12th State Executive Council meeting held in Makurdi, the state capital.

The development was confirmed in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula.

According to Kula, Governor Alia directed all outgoing commissioners to immediately hand over the affairs of their ministries to the respective permanent secretaries.

He expressed appreciation for their service over the past two years, adding that the dissolution was a necessary step to allow others to contribute to the development of the state.

“The dissolution is not punitive,” the statement said. “It is part of a broader strategy to reinvigorate governance and ensure a more inclusive administration.”

Alia urged those who may not be reappointed to remain loyal to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and continue to support his administration’s vision.

Meanwhile, the governor has appointed legal luminary and former two-term Attorney General of the state, Moses Atagher, as the new Chief of Staff, replacing Paul Biam.

Atagher is also a former Acting Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank and is reputed for his administrative competence and public service record.

Reacting on behalf of the outgoing officials, former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and Public Order, Bemsen Mnyim, thanked Governor Alia for the opportunity to serve the state.

“Every opportunity to serve is a learning ground,” Mnyim said. “We are grateful for the privilege and the experience we gained.”
