Ohanaeze Distances Self From Report Urging Obi To Quit 2027 Presidential Race

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has denied ever urging the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, to withdraw from the 2027 presidential contest.

The group described as “false and mischievous” a circulating statement claiming it asked Obi to shelve his presidential ambition ahead of the 2027 polls.

In a strongly worded rebuttal issued on Tuesday, Ohanaeze’s National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, dismissed the statement as the handiwork of faceless individuals parading themselves under a fake Ohanaeze identity.

Chukwu said the statement “was fabricated by a group of starving street urchins operating under a phantom brown envelope Ohanaeze, with POS as their address,” stressing that it did not emanate from the authentic leadership of the organisation.

“Every rational Igbo indigene and right-thinking Nigerian knows that the Senator John Azuta Mbata-led Ohanaeze Ndigbo cannot issue such an ignominious statement,” he stated.

He further clarified that Ohanaeze Ndigbo remains a non-partisan and apolitical body committed to the welfare of the Igbo people and the promotion of justice, fairness, and equity in national affairs.

According to Chukwu, the organisation has not taken any position on the 2027 presidential election, nor has it endorsed or rejected any candidate.

“Ohanaeze is not a political party and will never be drawn into partisan propaganda. Our focus remains the collective good of Ndigbo and national cohesion through justice and inclusion,” he added.

The group’s response follows increasing speculation and media reports suggesting political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Obi being one of the high-profile figures believed to be eyeing a return bid.

PLATFORM TIMES reports that Peter Obi has yet to officially declare his intention for 2027, but he continues to feature prominently in national discourse as a possible contender.
