Accuses David Mark-led Leadership Of Illegal Takeover, Vows Court Action

A fresh crisis has erupted within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as Nafi’u Bala, a former governorship candidate in Gombe State and ex-deputy national chairman, has declared himself the interim national chairman of the party.

Bala made the declaration during a press conference on Wednesday night in Abuja, describing the recent changes in the party’s leadership as an unconstitutional hijack orchestrated by “political outsiders.”

He vowed to challenge the development in court if the party’s original structure is not restored.

“We wish to draw the attention of all members of our great party and Nigerians at large to the ongoing acts of political hooliganism being perpetrated by some individuals who were hitherto entrusted with the leadership of the party,” Bala said.

He alleged that the David Mark-led faction, recently announced by the party’s founder and former national chairman, Ralph Nwosu, is an illegitimate body that emerged through a “shameful political takeover.”

According to Bala, the July 2 decision to dissolve the National Working Committee and install Mark as interim chairman contravenes the ADC constitution.

“This is not only a betrayal of party principles but a reckless abandonment of internal democracy. Only elected officials have the legal mandate to manage the party’s affairs,” Bala declared.

He insisted that based on the party’s constitutional succession procedures, he is the rightful interim national chairman.

He also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to formally recognize him as the legitimate leader of the ADC.

The leadership crisis follows the recent adoption of ADC as the political coalition platform for opposition heavyweights such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Aminu Tambuwal, Uche Secondus, and Nasir el-Rufai, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Bala, however, warned that the ongoing attempt to hand over the party to “political strangers” could jeopardize its future and credibility.

“In the history of democracy all over the world, no party leader or group has the power to arbitrarily transfer political authority to non-members,” he emphasized.

He further threatened legal action if what he described as an “unprecedented act of impunity” is not reversed, insisting that party members will not stand by while “ADC is auctioned off to the highest bidder.”
