Fast rising entertainer, Marcel Obute Chukunonso, aka Blue Boy, has always had passion for music.
Right from childhood, he was always asking his parents to buy him musical instruments. No wonder, he began his music career at a tender age. “When I was small, I was always disturbing my parents for musical instruments. I love singing and playing musical instruments,” he recalled.
According to Blue Boy, his uncle noticed his interest in music and got him a keyboard when he was at about seven. He stealthily built up his passion and went further to acquire professional music training, basically specializing in keyboards.
By the time the young, talented Blue Boy finished secondary school, he had become adept at the keyboard. But rather than rest on his laurels, he went further to study Music at University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State.
“I started playing music covers. Covers are songs on short clips, which I used to build my fan base after which I dropped a song called Davido 30BG. I wanted to shoot a music video but I had a little hitch. My sister, Ada, died and it melted my heart,” he lamented.
Ada’s demise drove Blue Boy to drop another song in honour of the first daughter of the family. “I dropped another song titled Ada and, to my credit, it picked, topping the chat. Ada is the one skyrocketing this song because I’m hitting over 45,000 streams on Spotify now.”
Though, Blue Boy has been facing some challenges, he is not deterred. He, however, noted finance as a major challenge. “Musicians are the most depressed set of entertainers in the world. When you look back and see that no friend is behind you, you’ll be so depressed to the extent that you would want to quit. If you are strong, you would move; but if you’re not strong, it can make you quit. Also, there are some friends, especially fake friends that don’t want your progress. So, one needs to be careful with friends because if you’re not careful, a music career can drive an artist crazy,” he explained.
Despite challenges, Blue Boy intends to stay in music as long as God wants. “I have never even started. Staying is an understatement. I’m still mopping the kitchen. Nobody is ready for me yet, but I am coming.”
On inspiration, the artist confessed that listening to musical instruments, nature, environment and women ginger him. “I don’t smoke nor drink. Women, musical instruments, nature and environment inspire me. I love women because they are soft and beautiful,” he admitted.
Blue Boy promised to roll out his first EP album containing about six songs soon. “Once I drop the EP, I’m going to take a break and then see how I’m going to run a massive promotion, because by next year, I should be on tour starting from the universities. And in the next three years, I’ll start travelling outside the country because my aim is to go global and top the charts.”
