Former Secretary General of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Elder Anthony Sani, has urged ex-President Goodluck Jonathan to ignore mounting pressure to join the 2027 presidential race, warning that such a move could undermine both his legacy and the political stability of the country.
In a statement posted on Facebook on Sunday, Sani acknowledged Jonathan’s towering national profile and international respect but argued that fielding another southern candidate in 2027—while President Bola Tinubu, also from the South, is still in office—would heighten regional tensions and weaken the case for equitable power rotation.
“The South already has a sitting president. Pushing another southern candidate in 2027 risks aggravating zoning disputes and eroding the moral argument for fairness,” Sani said.
He cautioned that Jonathan, who handed over power peacefully in 2015, should protect the global acclaim he earned for his statesmanship, rather than risk it in what could become a divisive and high-stakes contest.
“Jonathan left office with dignity. Returning now could overshadow that legacy,” he warned.
The former ACF leader also stressed that Nigeria needs fresh leadership, not recycled figures, to drive generational renewal and innovative governance.
“For the South to maintain political influence, it must adopt a strategic approach to succession and coalition building, not be swayed by emotionally driven campaigns,” Sani added.
According to him, Jonathan’s place in history is already assured, and the wiser course would be for him to remain a respected elder statesman, focusing on mentoring and guiding future leaders rather than returning to partisan politics.
