Tinubu ‘Hale and Hearty’ — Presidency Dismisses Illness Rumours

The Presidency on Monday dismissed growing speculation over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s health, insisting that the Nigerian leader remains “hale and hearty” and fully engaged in official duties.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Print Media, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, made the clarification during a live interview with the BBC Hausa Service, countering media reports suggesting that Tinubu was seriously ill and preparing to travel abroad for medical treatment.

“There is no truth in those reports. The President has been working from his office and attending to state matters,” Abdulaziz stated.

Speculation over the President’s health intensified after his last public appearance on August 1, when he declared open the Summit on Journalism for National Development in Abuja.

Before then, he hosted the Super Falcons at the Presidential Villa in celebration of their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations victory in Morocco.

Over the weekend, an investigative report claimed unnamed sources within the Presidency had confirmed Tinubu’s ill health, alleging that it was responsible for a slowdown in governance and the cancellation of several engagements.

The report further claimed that the Presidential medical team was preparing for an emergency evacuation abroad.

Abdulaziz described the publication as “false and misleading,” stressing that such rumours were intended to create unnecessary panic and undermine public confidence in the administration.

“The President is not only healthy but also fully committed to delivering on his mandate. Nigerians should disregard these baseless stories,” he said.

Since assuming office in May 2023, Tinubu’s health has occasionally been the subject of public speculation, a development the Presidency has repeatedly condemned as politically motivated.
