Remo Poll: PDP Accuses Abiodun Of Threatening Monarchs Ahead Of Remo Bye-Election

The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has accused Governor Dapo Abiodun of allegedly threatening to depose some traditional rulers in the Remo axis if the All Progressives Congress loses the forthcoming Remo Federal Constituency bye-election scheduled for Saturday, August 16.

The party, in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Publicity Secretary, Otunba Kayode Adebayo, claimed the governor summoned selected monarchs to a secret meeting on Friday, August 8, where he allegedly warned them of removal from office should the APC suffer defeat in their domains.

Describing the alleged action as “a desecration of the sanctity of traditional institutions,” the PDP warned the governor against dragging royal fathers into partisan politics.

The statement read partly, “Our royal fathers are custodians of culture and tradition, not political tools. Threatening them with removal if your party loses an election is both shameful and undemocratic.”

The PDP accused the APC-led administration of resorting to intimidation in the face of dwindling public support, insisting that the bye-election would be decided by the will of the people and not by coercion.

“As the bye-election draws closer, how many royal fathers can Mr Abiodun threaten? Ogun citizens must be allowed to choose their representatives freely without fear,” the statement added.

The opposition party also urged the APC leadership to caution the governor, saying political desperation was undermining public trust.

While sympathising with the affected monarchs, the PDP pledged continued engagement with traditional rulers “with utmost respect and regard,” assuring that royal concerns would remain a priority if the party returns to power.

As of press time, Governor Abiodun and the APC were yet to respond to the allegations.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Lekan Adeniran has not responded to the message sent to his mobile as of the time of filing this report .
