Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday described the Minna residence of former Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (retd.), as a “political Mecca” where Nigerians continually troop for counsel and direction.
Jonathan stated this in Minna, Niger State, when he led other well-wishers to celebrate the 84th birthday of the former Nigerian leader.
According to him, Babangida’s unique style of leadership and commitment to Nigeria’s unity have made his Hilltop Mansion a rallying point for politicians, statesmen and ordinary citizens alike.
“Nigeria has produced leaders since independence, but Gen. Babangida stands out clearly as one of those who want the best for the country,” Jonathan said.
“That is why today, his house is like a Mecca of sort. People come to him regularly, and that tells you a lot about the character of IBB.”
The former president noted that Babangida had consistently resisted sectional politics, preferring instead to be seen as a national leader.
“He never sees himself as a sectional leader but as someone who believes in the unity of this country. For that, he will continue to be celebrated,” Jonathan added.
He prayed for long life and good health for Babangida, noting that the younger generation still needs his wisdom and guidance.
The low-key birthday celebration was marked with special prayers and the presentation of symbolic gifts by family members, political associates and other well-wishers.
Babangida, popularly called IBB, ruled Nigeria between 1985 and 1993. Despite the controversies surrounding his regime, his residence in Minna has remained a traditional convergence point for political consultations across the country.
