The Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, has broken new ground in renewable energy innovation with the successful conversion of two petrol-engine vehicles into electric-powered automobiles, which were officially handed over to the state government on Tuesday.

The vehicles, converted under the supervision of the university’s technical team, were presented to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Technology in Ilorin.

Speaking on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, the Chairman of KWASU Hold-co, Prof. Kenneth Adeyemi, described the project as a milestone that would not only promote a greener environment but also strengthen the state’s drive towards sustainable technology.

“This is a proof of concept that shows Kwara State University’s capacity to deliver world-class innovation. Beyond reducing carbon emissions, this initiative will cut costs and boost the local economy,” Adeyemi said.

He assured that more vehicles currently undergoing conversion would be delivered before September 2025, stressing that manuals for usage and maintenance had been prepared, while drivers of the vehicles would also be trained.

Adeyemi commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for giving the university the platform to demonstrate its research capacity and practical relevance to society.

Receiving the keys on behalf of the state government, the Commissioner for Business, Innovation and Technology, Damilola Yusuf Adelodun, praised the KWASU team for what he called “a forward-looking project” that aligns with the government’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.

“This is a step in the right direction. We are proud of KWASU for leading this initiative and setting an example for other institutions,” the commissioner said.

The event, attended by top officials of the university and the ministry, marked a significant step in Kwara’s ambition to embrace cleaner energy alternatives in government operations.
