Party more peaceful, focused • Say defectors wasted political fortune

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum on Monday mocked former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Senate President David Mark, Dino Melaye and other party chieftains who recently dumped the PDP for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), declaring that their departure has only strengthened the party.

The Forum, in a statement signed by its Director General, Emmanuel Agbo, said the PDP had become “more formidable and focused” since the defectors left, insisting that the opposition platform they joined was nothing more than a “one-chance vehicle.”

Agbo noted that the defectors, after their exit, resorted to “irresponsible verbal attacks” against the PDP, but likened their move to the Biblical prodigal son who squandered his inheritance.

“Since their exit, the PDP has become much more formidable and focused, with clear determination to have our eyes on the ball,” the Forum said.

“The ADC before now, with their inordinate sense of entitlement, constituted a huge clog to the wheel of national unity and harmony. That the ADC couldn’t see that much isn’t surprising, as the prodigal son wasn’t known to have any pity on his father’s fortune.”

The governors further said the defection of the high-profile members had brought peace to the PDP, stressing that the party was now better positioned to present itself as the credible alternative Nigerians desire.

While throwing the jab, the Forum added that its doors remained open to welcome back repentant defectors who demonstrate remorse.

The statement also highlighted the worsening security situation in the country, which it said was a major concern of PDP governors and formed the centrepiece of their deliberations.

Atiku, Mark, Melaye and others had in recent weeks formally joined the ADC, a coalition of opposition forces, a move many analysts say could reshape the 2027 political contest.
