The Ogun State chapter of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has demanded that the 2027 governorship seat be ceded to Muslims, lamenting what it described as decades of political exclusion in the state.
The group, in a statement signed by its state chairman, Alhaji Tajudeen Jimoh Alao, and secretary, Alhaji Olaleye Rasheed Damilare, on Saturday, insisted that fairness, justice, and inclusiveness must define the state’s political leadership going forward.
MURIC argued that since Ogun was created in 1976 and with the return to democratic governance in 1979, only one Muslim had occupied the governor’s seat, a situation it described as “glaring, unjustifiable and unacceptable.”
The statement read partly, “Governance is a sacred trust (amānah), and leadership must be rooted in fairness and justice.
“Shockingly, in more than four decades of Ogun State’s existence, Muslims have been grossly marginalised, with only one Muslim ever serving as governor despite the significant Muslim population in the state. This imbalance must end in 2027.”
The group declared that its position was clear: “Our collective demand is for a Muslim governor, irrespective of the geopolitical zone. We will no longer tolerate persistent marginalisation of Muslims in Ogun’s political leadership.”
Quoting the Qur’an (5:2), MURIC urged Muslim stakeholders—including scholars, politicians, professionals, youths, traders, and women—to unite in ensuring that the next governor emerges from the Muslim community.
The body outlined steps towards actualising the demand, calling on Muslims to publicly declare support for the cause, secure their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and place unity of the Ummah above sectional interests.
MURIC warned that without political power, Muslims in the state risk continued neglect. It added, “A Muslim governor in 2027 is not merely a political aspiration—it is a moral, spiritual, and democratic necessity that guarantees inclusiveness and equity.”
The group prayed for divine guidance in what it described as a “historic struggle for balance, justice and fairness in Ogun State governance.”
