Wike Knocks El-Rufai Over 2027 Prediction, Says Tinubu Will “Win Squarely”

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has faulted former Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufai, over his recent forecast that President Bola Tinubu would only manage a third-place finish in the 2027 presidential election.

El-Rufai, in a weekend interview, claimed that the 2027 contest could head into a second round since no candidate might secure an outright majority. He argued that Tinubu’s re-election chances were slim, insisting the President could, at best, come third.

Reacting on Monday, Wike described the ex-governor’s prediction as “faulty mathematics,” saying it was illogical to predict a third-place finish without identifying the supposed first and second-place contenders.

“El-Rufai is my friend, but he failed in this mathematics, he goofed. Since he knows Tinubu will come third, who then comes first and second? How did he arrive at that conclusion?” Wike queried.

The FCT minister, who maintained that Tinubu would retain power in 2027, challenged El-Rufai to a public wager on the outcome.

“In this one, I will put a bet, if he agrees, that Tinubu will win this election squarely,” Wike declared.

He also dismissed comparisons with the 2015 election, when then-President Goodluck Jonathan lost power, insisting that no politician could easily dislodge Tinubu’s strongholds.

“Jonathan’s case was different. No two persons are the same. As I sit here, do I look like someone you can defeat in Rivers? It’s not possible,” Wike boasted.

The exchange adds another layer to the already charged political atmosphere as politicians across party lines begin subtle positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
