INEC Tackles ADC Over Alleged “Implausible” Voter Registration Figures In Osun

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Osun State, has dismissed as baseless the claims by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that figures from the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in the state were “statistically implausible.”

INEC, in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Musa Olurode, on behalf of the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mutiu Olaleke Agboke, said Osun had consistently recorded high civic participation in voter registration, contrary to ADC’s insinuations.

The electoral body described the ADC’s allegation as unfounded, stressing that Osun has a verifiable history of leading other states in online pre-registration during the build-up to both the 2022 governorship election and the 2023 general polls.

“The people of Osun State have shown, time and again, their uncommon commitment to electoral participation, which translated into massive voter mobilization and impressive registration figures,” the statement read.

INEC further clarified that online pre-registration does not automatically confer voter status unless followed by physical biometric capture at designated centres, warning political parties against misleading the public.

“The ADC’s claim of ‘statistical implausibility’ is untrue. The figures recorded so far are consistent with the State’s history of active civic engagement and should rather be celebrated as evidence of growing democratic awareness than disparaged with baseless insinuations,” INEC said.

The Commission accused the ADC of spreading misinformation and urged political parties to verify facts before rushing to the press with unfounded allegations.

“Instead of dissipating energy on baseless accusations and discrediting INEC, we urge political parties to join hands in sensitizing, educating, and mobilizing eligible Nigerians to participate in the CVR exercise,” the statement added.

Dr. Agboke, according to the release, remains committed to transparency, credibility, and inclusiveness in the electoral process, noting that the high turnout in Osun was the result of sustained enlightenment campaigns.

INEC reaffirmed that the CVR exercise was being conducted in line with the Electoral Act 2022, its guidelines, and global best practices, stressing that it would not be distracted by unsubstantiated claims.
