A member of the House of Representatives, representing Abeokuta South, Hon. Afolabi Moruf Afuape, has charged Nigerian students to embrace discipline and hard work as the only pathway to success, stressing that there is no shortcut to greatness.

Afuape, gave the charge during the 4th edition of the Afolabi Moruf Afuape Education Support Initiative held at Rev. Kuti Memorial Grammar School and St. Peter’s Primary School, Abeokuta.

Addressing hundreds of students who participated in the free summer coaching organised under the scheme, the lawmaker, an economist, personally taught International Trade, describing the subject as a key driver of economic development.

“There’s no escape route in life except hard work,” Afuape told the students, urging them to focus on their studies and avoid distractions that could derail their future.

The lawmaker explained that the initiative was not a political gimmick but a deliberate effort to support children from less-privileged backgrounds who might not be able to afford private summer classes.

“Most parents may not have the opportunity to send their children to paid summer lessons. That is why we created this platform, and for four years now, we have continued to sustain it,” he added.

Teachers and students who spoke with PLATFORM TIMES expressed appreciation for the programme, describing it as impactful and life-changing.

A senior teacher at Unity High School, Mrs. Akinpelu Adenike, said the scheme had given participating students an advantage over their peers. She however called for more publicity so that more parents and pupils could benefit.

Similarly, a student of Abeokuta Grammar School, Akintade Tijesuni Susana, said the initiative had reduced the burden on parents.

“Some parents cannot afford this. I know how much my friends pay for summer classes outside. This makes me appreciate this programme and its organisers more,” she said.

Participants described Afuape’s hands-on teaching approach as inspiring and rare, noting that his presence showed leadership beyond politics.

Since its inception, the Afolabi Moruf Afuape Education Support Initiative has continued to bridge educational gaps in Abeokuta South, fostering a culture of discipline, learning, and leadership among young people.
