A chieftain of the Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, the State Director of Publicity, Olufemi Nuberu, has defended the suspension of former governor and senator representing Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, insisting the action was in line with the party’s constitution and not a product of political vendetta.
The development followed criticisms from Daniel’s camp, which dismissed the sanction as baseless and politically motivated. His media aide, Steve Oliyide, had described Governor Dapo Abiodun as a “budding emperor” bent on edging Daniel out of the APC, arguing that the suspension lacked legal or moral grounds.
“This so-called suspension has no basis in law or morality. It is politically motivated, and the governor is simply attempting to consolidate himself as a budding emperor in Ogun politics,” Oliyide said on a radio programme in Ijebu last week.
He added that Daniel remained a bona fide member of the party and accused some media houses of misrepresenting the situation, calling the sanction a witch-hunt.
But in a rebuttal, Nuberu insisted that Daniel’s suspension followed due process and was endorsed by the State Working Committee led by Chairman Yemi Sanusi on August 19, 2025.
“The issue between the former governor and the present governor has nothing to do with the party. They are suspended, not expelled, and there are opportunities to appeal that have not been exhausted,” Nuberu said.
He maintained that the sanction was strictly guided by the APC constitution and dismissed talk of political power play as a distraction.
While refusing to state the specific anti-party offences Daniel was accused of, Olufemi stressed that the party had evidence that due process and fair hearing were followed.
“The constitution is very explicit about fair hearing. Acknowledgment copies of the invitation letters are part of the annexure with the report submitted to the state executive. They also have the right to appeal within seven days,” he explained.
Nuberu, further clarified that the suspension, though indefinite, was not tantamount to expulsion.
“Their suspension is indefinite, not an expulsion, until they appeal in the right manner. But the kind of language they are putting out makes it seem like they are aware they are wrong,” he added.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the suspension has, however, deepened divisions within the APC in Ogun State, with loyalists split between Daniel and Governor Abiodun, raising concerns about internal democracy, alleged executive overreach, and the political future of the former governor ahead of the 2027 general elections.
