President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday dismissed speculations that he is considering dropping Vice-President Kashim Shettima from the 2027 presidential ticket, insisting he made no mistake in his choice of deputy.
There had been growing rumours within political circles that Tinubu might not run alongside Shettima in the next general election, following recent endorsements of the president for a second term by some All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders in the North-East without mentioning the vice-president.
But in a personally signed birthday message to Shettima, who turned 59 on Tuesday, Tinubu described his deputy as a loyal partner whose competence, courage and commitment have greatly strengthened the administration.
“Every day, as Vice President, you have justified that choice by strengthening our work, bringing fresh perspectives, and upholding our commitment to Nigerians. Your dedication reassures me that I did not make a mistake in choosing you as my deputy,” Tinubu said.
The president praised Shettima’s years of public service, citing his tenure as Borno State governor and later as senator representing Borno Central, where he said Shettima exemplified leadership in difficult times.
Tinubu further credited Shettima with playing a vital role in driving key aspects of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, including efforts in food security, global trade partnerships and investment reforms.
“Our relationship transcends official duties. It is a bridge across regions and traditions, united in purpose and service.
“You remind us of what is possible when Nigeria comes first — an example worthy of emulation by those who aspire to lead,” Tinubu added.
