…. New Ethics Framework To Screen All Public, Private School Teachers

….Policy Targets unqualified, Fake, Corrupt Personnel

The Federal Government has rolled out a mandatory ethics and criminal background verification framework for all teachers in public and private schools across the country.

The initiative, announced on Tuesday by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) through a post on X, will require thorough checks on prospective teachers before employment to ensure integrity and professionalism in the education sector.

According to the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, the policy is designed to restore accountability in the school system, stressing that teachers must embody moral discipline as role models to learners.

“This initiative is to strengthen professionalism and protect the sanctity of the classroom. Teachers must be individuals of sound moral character because they shape the future of the nation,” Alausa was quoted as saying.

The new framework will be integrated into the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) digital portal, which will serve as a real-time platform for teacher registration, licensing, and monitoring.

Explaining further, the Registrar of TRCN, Ronke Soyombo, said the digital portal would also introduce AI-powered lesson planning tools and state-level investigation panels to improve teaching standards.

She added that the move would curb impersonation, forgery, and the employment of unqualified personnel in schools.

Education stakeholders have described the development as a step towards sanitising Nigeria’s educational system, even as they urged the government to ensure strict enforcement of the policy.
