The Emir of Kano, Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II, has earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Law from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.
The convocation ceremony, which held on Thursday at Friends House, London, was attended by top dignitaries, including Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State and Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, who joined the emir to celebrate what he described as “a significant milestone” in his academic journey.
Sanusi’s thesis, titled “Codification of Islamic Family Law as an Instrument of Social Reform: A Case Study of the Emirate of Kano and Comparison with the Kingdom of Morocco”, explored the role of Islamic legal reforms in strengthening family institutions and advancing social development.
The ceremony began with a brunch hosted in honour of the emir by the Vice-Chancellor of SOAS before the formal award of degrees in the afternoon session.
Speaking after receiving his degree, the emir expressed delight at the achievement, noting that it reflects his lifelong commitment to knowledge and reform.
“This is an honour and a personal fulfilment of my intellectual journey. I am deeply grateful to my family, friends, and associates who stood by me, and to those who travelled to London to share in this joy,” Sanusi said.
Sanusi, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and the 16th emir of Kano, has consistently combined traditional leadership with scholarship, earning global recognition for his intellectual contributions to economics, law, and governance.
The event was graced by close associates of the emir, traditional leaders, academics, and political figures, who hailed the milestone as another demonstration of his pursuit of knowledge despite the demands of public service and leadership.
