Italian fashion icon Giorgio Armani has died at the age of 91.
Armani, celebrated as the very embodiment of Italian elegance, transformed global fashion with his sleek, minimalist approach to tailoring.
Daily Sun brings to you five key things to know about his life and legacy:
1. Revolutionary designer: Armani redefined fashion in the 1970s with his unstructured, minimalist jacket, emphasising effortless elegance.
His designs, known for soft fabrics and relaxed silhouettes, transformed menswear and empowered women with sophisticated power suits, making him a global symbol of Italian style.
2. Built a fashion empire: Founded in 1975 with partner Sergio Galeotti, Armani’s eponymous brand grew into a multibillion-dollar empire, valued at over $10 billion.
Beyond clothing, it includes accessories, perfumes, cosmetics, home furnishings, restaurants, hotels, and even a basketball team, ranking him among Forbes’ top 200 billionaires.
3. Hollywood influence: Armani’s designs gained international fame through Hollywood, notably outfitting Richard Gere in American Gigolo (1980), which cemented his brand’s cultural impact.
His elegant gowns and tuxedos became red-carpet staples, worn by countless celebrities.
4. Independent visionary: Unlike many peers, Armani maintained control of his company, resisting luxury conglomerate takeovers.
He worked closely with family, like niece Roberta Armani, and trusted associates, planning a gradual succession to ensure his brand’s independence.
5. Lasting legacy: Known as “Re Giorgio” (King Giorgio), Armani’s focus on timeless elegance and social consciousness inspired generations.
His support for young designers and contributions to Milan Fashion Week solidified his influence, with tributes from figures like Donatella Versace and Bernard Arnault highlighting his enduring impact.
Armani’s death marks the end of an era, but his vision continues to shape the global fashion landscape.
