Nigerians Can Now Register For NIN, Voter Cards At Same Centres – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that Nigerians will soon be able to register for their National Identification Number (NIN) and obtain voter cards at the same centres nationwide.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this on Wednesday when the management team of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) visited the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Yakubu explained that the move followed a new partnership between INEC and NIMC aimed at harmonising the collection of citizens’ biometric data.

According to him, both institutions currently hold the largest databases in the country, with INEC focused on election records and NIMC on national identity.

“Since the ultimate goal is to enrol every citizen with NIMC, we look forward to the day when your database will serve as the single source of truth for citizenship identification in Nigeria,” Yakubu said.

He noted that the collaboration would eventually allow Nigeria to develop a unified citizenship register that could also serve as the national voter register, similar to what is obtainable in other countries.

“This may also enable citizens to vote in future elections from their places of choice anywhere in the country, rather than being restricted to polling units where they initially registered,” he added.

The INEC boss revealed that the initiative was successfully tested during a pilot scheme conducted in Anambra State between July 8 and 20, 2025, where NIMC officials were stationed at Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) centres.

“We are now set to scale it up nationwide. Citizens will therefore have the opportunity to register as voters while simultaneously enrolling for the NIN,” he said.

Yakubu stressed that NIMC would in due course release details of CVR centres where its personnel would be deployed as well as modalities for the NIN registration.

He assured Nigerians that the partnership was part of INEC’s commitment to collaborate with other national institutions to strengthen the country’s electoral system.
