Former Sokoto State governor and ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has declared his preference for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in any future national leadership contest.
Speaking on Politics Today on Friday, Tambuwal said his political alignment is guided by principles of governance and leadership rather than personal relationships.
“When it comes to the leadership of this country and the leadership of the people, tomorrow, not even today, I would rather support Atiku than Nyesom Wike,” he said.
The disclosure comes against the backdrop of a lingering rift within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which has seen Wike clash with Atiku, Tambuwal, and other party leaders since the contentious 2023 presidential primaries.
Wike had accused northern PDP heavyweights of reneging on a zoning agreement that could have given the South a better shot at the party’s ticket.
He also reminded the public that he supported Tambuwal in 2011 when he emerged Speaker of the House, even against the party’s initial stance.
But Tambuwal, while maintaining respect for Wike, said political disagreements should not be mistaken for personal animosity.
“It is a collaboration; it is not something difficult. Once it is about being altruistic and nothing personal. You have never seen me going against President Bola Tinubu personally, and you have never heard of me going against Nyesom Wike personally,” he explained.
